World’s Fair Pavilion
Built in 1909 – 1910
Part of the park reconstruction plan and a gift to Saint Louis for hosting the Fair.
The Pavilion was built there because that was the location of the Missouri Exhibit during the World’s Fair. Sadly, the Exhibit was destroyed by fire just a few days before the Fair was over.
The hill in front of the World’s Fair Pavilion is called Government Hill because that is where the US Government had its Exhibit during the World’s Fair.
The WPA constructed the stairs and helped to terrace the hill. Look closely – can you see the zig-zag sidewalk from where you’re standing at the bottom of the hill?
No, and there was great care to keep the sidewalks hidden from view from the bottom of the hill.
